Planning to Pay for Senior Support Services

Uncategorized  |  August 8, 2017

If your mom and dad are reaching an age at which they are slowing down, even if they are completely strong mentally, your family should start considering budgeting for senior support services. These services can include in-patient care, a live-in nurse, physical therapy, or less intensive care, including in-home care that takes place for a few nights a week. One of the first things your family should strongly consider is to sit down with all adult family members and develop a plan for sharing the expenses whatever they may be. Develop a sense of who will be chipping in and who may be contributing care to the loved one.

Who Will Be Providing Senior Support Services?

As your loved one reaches an age at which s/he needs help with chores around the house, keeping track of appointments, etc., some of this may be able to be done by family members. This allows you to spend time rather than money. It buys you time to save money for a later time when professional senior support services may become necessary. As you are doing research and thinking about Ma or Pa’s needs, the family should be flexible on the type of care needed.

  • You may have a long term plan for some family members to give weekend care or other part-time care, meaning you’d have to pay for part-time care from a professional.
  •  Your senior loved one may need care along the lines of help getting dressed and other mobility issues, supervision with medications, etc., that is best done every day.
  • Perhaps ‘round the clock care will be necessary

Money Matters

Once you understand the kind of care you’re looking for and who will be contributing, you can price some various programs. From there, you can look at savings that Mom or Dad may have, what savings the children may have, any IRA’s or similar funds you may be able to contribute to. It may be necessary to develop a plan for setting aside a certain amount each month, which may mean cutting back accordingly. During this process, it’s important to discover which components of care will be covered by Medicaid, Medicare, or other programs. Comfort Keepers can help you find a flexible plan that meets your family’s needs while taking your finances into consideration.
