To be eligible for the Personal Care Home Benefit (PCHB) in Saskatchewan, applicants need to satisfy several specific criteria. This program is designed to assist low-income seniors with expenses related to living in licensed personal care homes.
1.Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Personal Care Home Benefit, all of the following conditions must be met:
Age Requirement: Must be 65 years of age or older.
Residency: Must be a resident of Saskatchewan.
Living Arrangements: Must live in a licensed personal care home in Saskatchewan.
Income Threshold: Must have a monthly income below specified levels, which is assessed annually. The benefit is adjusted to cover the gap between the recipient’s income and a monthly threshold, raised to $3,500 as of April 2025. If married or common-law, half the combined household income is used for assessment.
2. Additional Details
Application and Documentation
Applicants need to submit a signed application form along with proof of income such as a Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency and OAS/GIS deposit proofs.
If applying on behalf of someone else, a consent form is also necessary.
There is a 60-day window to provide required paperwork post-application submission.
Benefit Amount
Starting April 2025, the benefit can be as much as $3,500 per month. Adjustments may occur based on annual reviews and cost-of-living changes.
The benefit begins from the date the Ministry receives the application, even if initially incomplete.
Renewal and Ongoing Eligibility
Approved recipients needn’t reapply annually, but income documentation should be updated each September.
Applicants should check annually for updated income thresholds and other eligibility details.
Example Scenario
Imagine a senior who is 67, living in Regina, inside a licensed personal care home, receiving an OAS pension, and having annual income below the threshold – this person would likely qualify for the PCHB. If married, the household income is evaluated, and half is used for eligibility calculation.
