Kidney Disease | Symptoms of kidney disease in seniors and older adults are often very subtle, meaning that the disease often goes undiagnosed. Understanding kidney disease symptoms in seniors helps spot the symptoms early and seek medical attention before the disease progresses.
Constant Coldness: Anemia and kidney disease may make someone feel cold even when surrounded by warmth. In addition, pyelonephritis or kidney infection may lead to fever and chills.
Changes in Urination: Because kidneys handle urine, changes in urination are often a sign of kidney disease. Some examples of change include traces of blood, foamy or bubbly urine, urges to urinate, and difficulty attempting to urinate.
Weakness or Fatigue: Loss of function creates a buildup of wastes in the body or anemia. This causes a shortage of red blood cells, leading to feelings of weakness or fatigue.
Swollen Ankles and Feet: As kidney function decreases, sodium builds up in the body. This causes swelling of the feet and ankles. Swollen feet and ankles can be symptoms of other illnesses, like heart disease, liver disease, or chronic leg vein issues.
Shortness of Breath or Difficulty with Breathing: Decreased kidney function can lead to the build-up of fluids in the body and lungs, causing shortness of breath. Shortness of breath is usually seen in the later stages of kidney disease.
Bad Taste in the Mouth: A consequence of waste buildup in the blood is a bad taste in the mouth. In some cases, a bad taste in the mouth is caused by medications used to treat kidney stones, high blood pressure, and arthritis.
Basic screening tests can determine if the kidneys are functioning well. If kidney disease is found during screening, a doctor known as a nephrologist can conduct deeper, more specialized evaluations and can advise on lifestyle changes to reduce or treat the symptoms of kidney disease. A Nephrologist is a doctor who specializes in kidney health.
