Health Eating for Seniors | October 15, 2019
What are prevention tips for diabetes and seniors? Diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by high glucose levels and the inability to process sugar. This illness is common in aging adults. Seniors make up almost half of the total number of individuals in Canada with diabetes. Studies show that the number of diabetic cases is on the rise. Without adequate management, diabetes can cause various health complications such as heart and kidney disease or vision loss.
On the other hand, with discipline, a strong support system, and help, diabetes can be successfully managed.
Education – When a person is diagnosed with diabetes, they must understand their diagnosis, risk factors, and treatment options. Encourage your loved one to learn about their particular type of diabetes and stay informed on how to treat it.
Diet – Adequate nutrition plays a pivotal role in diabetes management. Encourage your loved one to avoid foods with high sugar content and saturated fats. Instead go for well-balanced, healthy alternatives. You can also opt to work with a dietitian to create healthy and nutritious meal plans.
Exercise – Regular physical activity can help reduce the symptoms of diabetes. Your loved one does not have to engage in strenuous workouts to boost their fitness. Shorter periods of activity can do the trick too. But, before opting for a particular senior-friendly activity, make sure they seek advice from their doctor.
Proper medication management – Medication errors present a serious health concern for most older adults. This is especially true for those with diabetes. This problem is easily addressed with a system of reminders – your loved one can use a pillbox, set an alarm, or create a checklist that will remind them about medication schedules. As a caregiver, you can also opt to provide reminders yourself.
Regularly checking glucose and blood pressure – A physician will provide instructions on how to keep an eye on your loved one’s glucose levels – this is a must. Additionally, cholesterol levels and blood pressure values can also help detect when there is a medical problem, so they should be regularly checked too.
