Vancouver Respite Care | October 26, 2021
Senior Respite Care | Over 8 million Canadians provide unpaid care to a family member or friend, according to CARP. A million or more caretakers are over the age of 65. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than half of caregivers (53%) say their capacity to provide care is harmed by a decline in their health.
Caring for a senior relative can be both gratifying and difficult. Family caregivers must remember to take pauses and exercise self-care to stay happy in their roles.
Respite care is described as the temporary transfer of primary caregiving obligations to another person, generally a professional caregiver, relative, or friend, for primary caregivers to be relieved of their responsibilities. Some family carers prefer to have someone take on caregiver chores for a few hours a week or a few hours a day as respite care, which can take various forms. Alternatively, some arrange respite care for longer periods to enable a longer holiday or vacation.
This is especially critical for caregivers of senior citizens who are suffering from a serious disease. According to a study done with the help of Comfort Keepers and Clear Care and led by the Stanford Center on Longevity and Stanford University Psychology Department, older family caregivers:
The goal of this research was to find out what obstacles and stressors family caregivers encounter. We contacted the family members and decision-makers of around 2,000 Comfort Keepers clients as part of our research study as a partner.
These findings imply that older people have higher emotional well-being than younger people, but that this is not the case when they have a member who is suffering from a serious disease. It is not true that all elderly individuals who have sick relatives are unhappy; rather, it is dependent on the degree of the relative’s illness.
Caring for an elderly relative can be rewarding and enhance family ties. However, it’s crucial to remember that being a family caregiver can bring up feelings of bereavement, worry, and physical exhaustion. Caregivers put their health and well-being at risk if they don’t account for their own needs or take breaks when they’re needed, and respite care is a simple answer for many families.
