Risk Factors for Falling | Although several seniors fall without getting seriously hurt, one out of five does get injured. It’s believed that less than half will tell a doctor. Unfortunately, things often worsen once an aging person has fallen because they become so frightened of falling again. This starts a downward slide since less activity makes the adult weaker, thereby increasing the odds that another fall will happen.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falling is a commonplace occurrence for the elderly population. Injuries from falling can make it challenging, or even impossible, to get around independently, perform everyday tasks, or live alone. Each year, millions of older adults receive emergency care for injuries after a fall and the costs from seniors taking falls continue to escalate as the number of aging adults in our population grows.
What is the best solution for keeping our aging loved ones safe? The best thing we can do is to educate and reduce the risk factors that lead to most falls. Stumbles and falls happen because of muscle weakness, vision or eye problems, loosely fitting shoes, Vitamin D deficiency, sedatives or other medications that can affect balance. Other risk factors to avoid are household clutter on the floor or steps, and animal feeding dishes, or toys. Reduce risk factors to lessen the chance of a fall.
Senior caregivers can be a great help in reducing the risk factors in a home environment. Caregivers trained by Comfort Keepers® can assess an environment for safety and offer suggestions to reduce the likelihood of a fall. If an adult has previously incurred an injury, a caregiver can aid in their complete recovery. Caregivers improve the odds of independent living again.
