Reduce The Risk of Fire | The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) wants to help you reduce your home fire risk by being aware of some simple changes to home environments. It’s important to understand household fires, how they often start, and what you can to do protect yourself and your loved ones. Fires devastate families with injuries and loss of lives and financial burdens are staggering, as well. Nonetheless, there are ways you can decrease the risk of fire.

Reduce The Risk of Fire – Safety Suggestions from NFPA:

• Install smoke alarms on each level of a home, inside and outside of any sleeping areas.
• Test the home smoke alarms at least once a month. Replace batteries at least once a year.
• Discard old smoke alarms over 10 years old.
• Stay in the room when cooking. Don’t leave the kitchen without turning off burners and/or appliances, especially when frying, grilling, or broiling.
• Have a fire extinguisher easily located in the kitchen area.
• Extinguish burning candles before leaving a room or preparing for sleep.
• Hide or lock up any matches and lighters so they don’t get in the hands of children.
• Check any electrical cords for cracks and replace if damaged.
• Keep heaters more than 3 feet from any furniture, curtains, bedding, etc.
• Ask family or friends who smoke to light up outside and provide them with sturdy, deep ashtrays.
• Make a detailed family plan for fire escape and rehearse it at least 2 times a year.
• Remember that if a fire does occur, get yourself out of the building, then call for help.
