Who Are Your Comfort Keepers

Senior Caregivers  |  February 25, 2023

Who are your Comfort Keepers? Prospective clients constantly ask me this very same question. Admittedly, it is a truly excellent question to ask. What clients are really saying is, ‘how can I trust these individuals?’ In good faith, we want to talk all about this. We want our prospective clients to know what efforts we make to do right by them.

Types of Professionals

Our staff come from all walks of life. Most of our staff are Companion Caregivers. Some are Personal Support Workers. Fewer still are Nurses.

Some are beginning their career in the health care field. Others are seasoned professionals who know this job like the back of their hand. Others are internationally trained medical professionals jumping through hoops to have their status recognized in Canada.

Most importantly, each of them is a capable professional who is here because they want to be. After all, this is not a typical 9 to 5 job; it is a calling.

How we Hire

So, we’re going to let you in on a secret; there is no secret. It’s all about due diligence. Because in life there are no guarantees. We only get opportunities. So, we must try our best to make good on them.

Moreover, as a small to mid-scale organization, we find ourselves uniquely situated to focus on quality service delivery. It is a simple, yet time-consuming filtration process. And it is a necessary part of ensuring that we hire candidates who have demonstrated that they have the potential to be entrusted with the health and safety of our clientele. Here is brief glimpse into our process:

  • Sourcing: Referrals from trusted stakeholders generally works best for us. It is an arrangement that can only work when there is mutual trust and respect between an organization and its stakeholders.
  • Application: Candidates must meet strict requirements and demonstrate their qualifications in order to apply to our openings.
  • Interview: Firstly, we have a brief initial interview. If successful, this is then followed by a much longer and more rigorous 1-hour interview. We ask a variety of questions, ranging from simple conversational questions to complex situational questions. Ultimately, our aim is to screen for desired qualities, such as empathy, tact, and integrity.
  • Vetting: Next, we then analyze their documentation, which can include police screening certificates, first aid training certification, educational qualifications, employment references, and more.
  • Paperwork: A primary focus of this is our company policies. Candidates must read through these and then affirm that they understand and will comply with these rules.

How we Train

In the next step, we schedule the staff member for onboarding training. This is based upon their intended roles. This training discusses many topics, including but not limited to:

  • Our brand, mission, and local office
  • The benefits of employment with Comfort Keepers
  • The role played by our staff members (Dignity, comfort, privacy etc.)
  • Client care and risk management principles
  • Technology at Comfort Keepers
  • Internal policies
  • Infection prevention and control

Following this, in-service field training is provided to staff as required. This training is facilitated by our own Client Care Coordinator, an experienced nurse.

How we Supervise Staff

Monitoring our staff helps us focus on quality client service delivery. It helps ensure that we are:

  • Constantly identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Recognizing quality work performance.
  • Connecting with our clients and their family caregivers.

We do this primarily through:

  • Field Performance Evaluations: We schedule random visits to client’s residences. We observe the interactions, go through a checklist of compliance items, and then we share the results with our staff and clientele.
  • Client Feedback: We touch base with our clientele and/or their family caregivers, both periodically and on an ongoing basis.
  • Employee Feedback: We also touch base with our staff on a periodic basis to discuss challenges, concerns, and pertinent observations.

How we Reward Staff

Have you ever worked at a place that does not value you? Regrettably, most of us have. It’s not the kind of place that promotes us to be at our best so that we can perform at our best. At Comfort Keepers, we do things differently. Here are some ways:

  • Performance Awards: Many of our staff are proud recipients of various awards, ranging from compliance to service.
  • Promotions: We promote from within. Most of our Management team come from our exceptional Comfort Keepers staff roster!
  • Company Parties: Because our staff should be celebrated during the holidays!
  • Team Game Nights: Because a team that plays together tends to remain together.
  • Community Service Events: Because we believe in being the change we want to see in the world.

Benefit to Client

So, what does this all mean to you, our prospective client? Well, as our existing clients testify on our Better Business Bureau and Google Reviews pages, it means that:

  • We source, hire, and train capable professionals
  • Our practices encourage our professionals to feel respected, comforted, and motivated, so that they can in turn pass this on to our clientele
  • Our approach promotes a relatively stable schedule, characterized by the same staff members with whom a relationship has developed and strengthened by the bonds of time.

So, back to our question of ‘who are your Comfort Keepers?’ These are our award-winning staff. We are a group of caring professionals who are qualified, supervised, and empowered to be their best so that we can give our best to our clients and their families.
