Dealing with a Cancer Diagnosis Later in Life

Being diagnosed with cancer later in life can be daunting and overwhelming, making a person feel as though their world is out of control. People often express feelings of helplessness and powerlessness upon discovering they have cancer.

However, many discover that crafting a personalized plan for managing a cancer diagnosis can assist seniors in making treatment decisions and regaining control over their lives. Furthermore, by engaging in intentional actions, it is possible to maintain a focus on quality of life and joyful moments, even during difficult times.

60% of people who have cancer are 65 or older.

Here are some strategies for coping with a cancer diagnosis:

  • Absorb the information – Allow yourself the time needed to absorb the news. Processing a diagnosis can be challenging, and you should feel comfortable taking the space required to come to terms with the next steps in your treatment plan.
  • Encourage education – As the saying goes, “Knowledge is power.” Encourage learning as much as possible about the type of cancer and available treatment options. Health care professionals are willing to provide resources to aid in understanding the diagnosis.
  • Express feelings – It’s normal to feel depressed, angry, sad, or overwhelmed after being diagnosed with cancer. There are many ways to express feelings, whether with a trusted person in life, a mental health professional, or a local support group.
  • Maintain healthy habits – Maintaining healthy habits is important following a cancer diagnosis. Follow the doctor’s advice on nutrition and exercise, and make an effort to care for mental and physical well-being.
  • Evaluate financial needs – Reviewing insurance and planning how to pay for treatment will help relieve stress in the future.
  • Focus on other parts of life – Focusing on controllable aspects of life helps people remember that they have the power to decide how they live.
