Summer Skin Protection
Everyone is happy that summer is nearly here and everyone, including our older adults in long term care, will be able to get outside again to take advantage of the warmer weather. Having ample time outdoors is a health benefit in so many ways, physically and emotionally. Nonetheless, the sun can be detrimental to skin and unfortunately, even more so to older skin. Aging skin must be protected from the harsh UV rays of summer. Here are some skin-saving tips to consider:
Cleanse Older Skin Gently
Older people will sweat more in the warmer months, but adults in long term care will need some assistance in keeping themselves fresh and clean. There are many gentle cleansers designed for sensitive skin. These are recommended because skin becomes fragile as people age. The skin gets much thinner because it has less collagen and elastin than when younger. Because the skin becomes delicate, it’s important to never scrub and to gently pat dry with soft towels.
Moisturize All Year Round
We think about moisturizing in winter months, but sometimes we forget about it in the summer. The air conditioning can actually dry skin out just as much as the furnace heat. Moisturize all year round.
Sunscreen Offers Protection
Adults in long term care will need help applying sunscreen if outside for more than a few minutes. Help prevent burning, sun damage, skin cancer, and other age-related conditions. As people age, it’s challenging for the skin to recover from the sun.
Fresh Clean Water
Consuming plenty of clean water can help purify bodies and skin of naturally occurring toxins. People who drink ample amounts of water often have noticeable improvements in skin tone. Six to eight glasses per day is typically suggested for seniors in long term care.
Stay Out of the Heat
Older adults in long term care are better off remaining indoors during the heat of the midday. The hot afternoon sun causes significant harm to skin and brings the danger of heat sickness, as well. Therefore, if an older adult must be outdoors in summer heat, limit it to a minimum.
Following these recommendations for older adults will reduce dry skin, risk of skin cancer, and other summer conditions that are easily prevented. Another benefit is more youthful-looking skin, which can help our older friends feel better about the way they look.
