Self-care in the golden years is easier said than done. Whether we are in our twenties, or in our seventies, this reality holds true. So, what can we do? Change is difficult, and choice is overwhelming, so what we need to do is to choose our desired rituals. Then, as senior care service providers, we focus on small, concrete steps to render self-care an easy and rewarding lifestyle. It’s all about the trio: decide, commit, and succeed.
Without further delay, here is the first half of our top ten list of Self-Care rituals to enjoy in the golden years:
If not now, then when? Enjoy a lunch in the backyard, drinks and a view from the balcony, a picnic at the park, or an evening at a local festival.
Exercise your way
Gyms are great, but are not entirely necessary. So, try to do what you can at home: do some stretches, walk laps around the neighbourhood, do some yoga or tai chi, or pick a partner and dance!
Connect with the great outdoors
There’s nothing like some fresh air to invigorate a tired soul – I’m talking from personal experience! In Ontario, our options are limitless; hiking, camping, sunbathing, fishing, bird-watching, hunting, and more.
I’m not just talking about tv! I’m talking about something active, something stimulating, something that makes you feel good. Admittedly, you can enjoy a puzzle or a good read when you’re at home. However, when you’re outdoors go for a game of chess at the park, draw or paint local landmarks and sky events, start a collection (Collectables), etc.
We often find that seniors tend to ignore the nutrition component of their lifestyles. This is a NO-NO! Remember, we are what we eat, so eat happy and eat healthy. Proper nutrition can be easy, and it can be fun. It does not need to be restrictive either, as there are plenty of alternatives. Whether this means preparing an omelette with toast, a hamburger with a side of coleslaw, or a grilled salmon on quinoa with salad, the sky’s the limit.
So, there you have it, – the first 5 of our top 10 self-care rituals to enjoy in the golden years – right at your fingertips. All you have to do now is start brainstorming, take your pick, and make it happen! Check out our next article for the second part. See you next month!
