Stress is just part of our life journey and there’s no avoiding it. Aging adults trade the worries of raising children and career concerns with other stressors. Older adults are often concerned and worried about their health or that of a loved one. They see that independence may be slipping away, and finances may be tight, too. The illness and death of loved ones come all too often. It’s all normal stress of life, but seniors may need to learn new skills to cope with stress in a healthy manner.
Studies have already shown that stress is connected with physical and mental problems, ranging from anxiety and depression to hypertension, and possibly even a lowered immunity. Stress left unmanaged increases heart disease risk by 40%, heart attack by 25%, and stroke by 50%! Other existing medical conditions may worsen from stress, also. What help is there for a senior?
There are techniques that seniors can learn to cope with stress and improve their health and wellbeing. Here are some items that could be helpful.
Learn meditation techniques and practice if feeling anxious, or on a regular basis
Practice deep breathing
Enjoy social time with friends and family
Make lifestyle choices that include exercise and healthy whole foods
Write in a journal each morning, before going to sleep, or both
Make a gratitude journal, noting all the good things that have happened
Volunteer for a community cupboard or a neighborhood non-profit
Learn more about body and mind at a yoga class
Enjoy soft and soothing music before bedtime
Watch a comedy or a funny show and laugh out loud
Take a break, go away for a weekend or a week to recharge
