Victoria Senior Health: The Causes of Pneumonia, Treatment, and Prevention

Victoria Senior Health: The Causes of Pneumonia, Treatment, and Prevention
A senior woman holds an oxygen mask to her face | Victoria Senior Health: The Causes of Pneumonia, Treatment, and Prevention | Comfort Keepers Victoria | BLOG POST

What Every Senior in Victoria, BC, Needs to Know About Pneumonia Causes, Treatments and Prevention

Pneumonia in Seniors | Due to their weaker immune systems, seniors are more prone to infections, such as pneumonia. This condition is caused by fungi, bacteria or viruses that manage to enter the lungs and trigger inflammation. Pneumonia can affect one or both lungs, and it can be mild as well as severe. In some cases, pneumonia can lead to death.

Why is Pneumonia More Common in Seniors?

Changes to the lungs as we age. Older adults are often not able to get rid of the secretions from their lungs. These discharges eventually go down into the bronchial tubes and cause the infection.

Weakened immune systems. Seniors, especially those who received chemotherapy, have had an organ transplant or have been using certain medications for a long period, have weak immune systems and therefore are prone to infections.

Senior health conditions. Some conditions can increase the likelihood of infections. Seniors with diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, HIV, cystic fibrosis, asthma, and COPD are more likely to get pneumonia.

Signs of Pneumonia in Seniors

Seniors who have pneumonia will show symptoms such as coughing, fever, chills, shortness of breath, chest pain, and fatigue.

Treatments for Pneumonia in Seniors

To see whether a senior has pneumonia, a doctor will do a chest X-ray and a blood test. Those who are diagnosed with this condition will receive medications, as well as fluids, oxygen, and painkillers.

Reducing the Risk of Pneumonia in Seniors

There are several ways seniors can maintain their health and avoid pneumonia. To reduce the risk of infection, older adults should discuss their options with their doctor and determine the best plan.

Get vaccinated. Aside from getting their annual flu shot, seniors should also receive a pneumococcal vaccine that protects against pneumonia bacteria.

Take steps to quit smoking. Smokers are more prone to pneumonia. Smoking can significantly weaken lung defence mechanisms, so taking steps to quit this habit is necessary.

Practice a healthy lifestyle. A healthy diet and a physician-approved exercise routine can improve seniors’ health and reduce the risk of infection.

Victoria’s Senior-Friendly Activities For All Seasons
A senior woman smiling while outside | Victoria's Senior-Friendly Activities For All Seasons | Comfort Keepers Victoria | BLOG POST

What Every Senior in Victoria, BC, Needs to Know About Engaging in Activities All Year!

Senior-Friendly Activities | No matter how old we are, we are much happier when we participate in activities and events that bring us joy and fulfillment. While seniors may find it more difficult to engage in some activities, it is important to find a way for your loved one to be physically, mentally, and socially active through senior-friendly activities in the area.

Seniors who have something to look forward to and who are a part of their community or nurture their hobbies show less brain aging, better memory, and improved mood. What is more, studies have shown that enjoyable activities are important for both physical and mental health, elevating life quality and preventing a myriad of age-related challenges.

Senior-Friendly Activities Start with a Plan

This is why families, caregivers, and medical professionals should all work together to build a plan that enables seniors to stay active and engaged and maintain a positive outlook on life through activity and socialization.

Winter Senior-Friendly Activities

The holiday season is a great time for seniors to bond with loved ones. Examples of winter activities for seniors include:

  • Shopping for the holidays is not just a nice way to spend a day with loved ones but an opportunity to move their bodies
  • Singing, dancing, listening to music, and playing instruments are all excellent ways for seniors to enjoy music
  • Volunteering at soup kitchens, helping in animal shelters or reading to children can enable seniors to stay active while giving back to the community

Spring Senior-Friendly Activities

With the arrival of warmer weather, seniors can enjoy many more outdoor activities, including:

  • Exercising, going to the gym, or swimming allows seniors to be physically active, boost their health, and get to know new people
  • Spring cleaning and organizing a yard sale lets seniors have fun while cleaning their home
  • Celebrating spring holidays like St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, Easter, and others offers plenty of opportunities for older adults to have fun with loved ones
  • Gardening enables seniors to adopt an enjoyable hobby and see their gardens or backyards transformed

Summer Senior-Friendly Activities

In the summer, seniors can engage in both indoor and outdoor activities, like:

  • Water aerobics early in the morning or evening lets seniors reap all the benefits of exercising in the water while enjoying themselves in the nice weather
  • Going to the movies, going to the local shopping mall or inviting friends over for a drink all allow older adults to stay active even when it is scorching hot outside
  • Picnics, concerts, and barbecues are all activities that seniors can engage in with family and friends

Fall Senior-Friendly Activities

Seniors can participate in many activities during the fall as well, such as:

  • Watching football, baseball, and hockey at home or in a local pub is a great way for seniors to support their favourite teams while connecting with others from their community
  • Observing fall foliage while sitting on the porch or going for a hike is an excellent opportunity for older adults to converse with their nearest and dearest and possibly even engage in physical activity
  • Organizing family dinners or Halloween celebrations lets seniors spend quality time with loved ones while also giving them the chance to be creative in the kitchen

Victoria Senior Health: Preventing Foodborne Illnesses

Victoria Senior Health: Preventing Foodborne Illnesses
A Roast Chicken dinner laid out on a table | Victoria Senior Health: Preventing Foodborne Illnesses | Comfort Keepers Victoria | BLOG POST

What Every Senior in Victoria, BC, Needs to Know About Avoiding Foodborne Illness

Preventing Foodborne Illnesses | Despite increased food safety regulations, foodborne illnesses are still a major health risk, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting that they affect almost 48 million people in the US every single year. The most common culprits are fish, dairy, and chicken, combined amounting to nearly 40% of all cases of foodborne illnesses in the nation.

Seniors are at a higher risk of developing foodborne illnesses and they often need much more time to recover than younger adults. Older adults are more prone to foodborne illnesses due to weakened immune systems and other bodily functions as well as prolonged medication use that just decreases the body’s natural defense against illnesses of any kind.

Tips for Seniors: Preventing Foodborne Illnesses

While contracting foodborne illnesses in senior years can be very dangerous, there are fortunately ways to prevent their development. Here are some recommendations from the US Food and Drug Administration when it comes to purchasing foods at the grocery store:

  • Do not buy products with damaged packaging like dented or leaky cans or cracked jars
  • Place meats and seafood in separate bags to avoid their juices dripping onto other food
  • Always look at the product dating and do not purchase foods that are nearing their expiration dates

Here Are Nine Useful Tips for Food Handling and Preparation:

Tip #1:

Always thoroughly wash hands with warm water and soap for a minimum of 20 seconds before handling any type of food

Tip #2:

Sanitize surfaces that come into contact with food

Tip #3:

Wash fruits and vegetables with water

Tip #4:

Separate meats and seafood from other foods to prevent cross-contamination

Tip #5:

Use separate cutting boards for raw foods and other types of food (veggies, bread…)

Tip #6:

Use a food thermometer to make sure your food is properly cooked

Tip #7:

Make sure that your fridge’s temperature is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit at all times

Tip #8:

Place perishable foods in the fridge within 2 hours of cooking

Tip #9:

Only thaw food in the fridge, cold water or microwave

How to Keep Seniors Safe While Eating Out:

  • Do not order foods with uncooked ingredients
  • If you do not like the look of your food, ask to have it sent back
  • Place any leftovers in your fridge within 2 hours of leaving the restaurant

Heart Pharmacy Partners with Comfort Keepers® Victoria for a New Program for Seniors

Heart Pharmacy Partners with Comfort Keepers® Victoria for a New Program for Seniors
Heart@Home logo | Heart Pharmacy | BLOG POST | Comfort Keepers Victoria

Join Us in Our Excitement to Introduce Comfort Keepers® Victoria’s Latest Community Partnership with Heart Pharmacy

Comfort Keepers® Victoria announces its partnership with Heart Pharmacy in an exciting new program called Heart@Home.

What is Heart@Home Program Offered by Comfort Keepers and Heart Pharmacy?

Heart@Home is a medication adherence service that aims to ensure great care every day. Heart@Home will send a Registered Care Aide (RCA) from Comfort Keepers® to patients’ homes to assist with medication. This program is designed for patients who can benefit from consistent visits and medication adherence.

Victoria’s Seniors and Medication Management

Physical and cognitive limitations cause many patients to be non-adherent with their medications. Limitations include dexterity, limited sight, declining memory/cognition, and mental health issues. Heart@Home was created to provide the best possible pharmacy care. This helps our community and enables patients to live healthier lives at home.

Heart Pharmacy and the Heart@Home Program for Your Senior Loved One

Patients are recommended for the program (by their doctor, a family member, a VIHA nurse, etc.). A Heart Pharmacist will meet with the patient to conduct a medication review and adherence assessment. If the pharmacist feels the patient is a good candidate for the program, they will confirm with the client’s doctor. Newly requested prescriptions will include instructions for “Daily Dispense,” and schedule a time and date to begin administration.

Seniors with optimized medication adherence show significant improvements in blood markers (INR, blood glucose, blood pressure), decreased medication side effects (dizziness and stomach upset), and stabilized MMSE scores. The daily medication schedule helps the Heart@Home program eliminate accidental exposure and repeat dosing.

Comfort Keepers® Victoria and Daily Client Visits

Comfort Keepers provides daily visits for companionship to patients, many of whom suffer silently from loneliness. Our RCAs are well-positioned to identify and attend to other areas, such as fall prevention or hygiene issues. When these concerns are identified, the client’s family and care team are informed and patients are directed to the appropriate care (hospital visit, MD visit, family check-in, etc.).

Patients utilizing this service have also been able to access other personal care services during home visits (including meal preparation, showers, etc.). These services are provided for a fraction of the cost of patients not in the program.

This partnership can dramatically reduce current and potential risks that often result in hospitalizations.

The Benefits of the Heart Pharmacy Heart@Home Program

This Heart@Home eliminates the question of whether or not ongoing health issues and/or changes are the result of not taking prescribed medications.

Heart Pharmacy and the Heart@Home Client Care Case Study

In one case study, the patient was seemingly unsuccessful in her warfarin therapy. The practitioner had advised switching to a higher-cost brand alternative. The Heart@Home program recommended daily medication administration to understand if medication adherence or metabolic issues necessitated alternative therapy.

After two weeks of daily visits, the patient’s INR was within range, and medication adherence was at 100%. The patient also reported an improvement in overall well-being because the social interaction with the RCA provided her with some respite from her loneliness. The program allowed the healthcare team to ensure that the patient was not only on the right medication at the right dose at the right time, but was also taking the right medication at the right dose and at the right time!

In short, the design of the program is to bring the caregiving and healthcare teams closer together. If a patient has a sudden change in their health status, the doctor is notified right away so that proper care can be coordinated.

Victoria Senior Health: Diabetes Tips for Prevention and Management

What Every Senior in Victoria, BC, Needs to Know About Diabetes Prevention and Management

Diabetes Tips for Seniors | Diabetes is a chronic condition characterized by an impaired ability to process glucose, causing several health complications. Diabetes can affect the heart, kidneys, and vision, making other conditions worse. However, with certain lifestyle changes, diabetes can be managed efficiently.

Five Diabetes Tips for Those Recently Diagnosed:

Tip #1. Education:

Both diabetic seniors and their caregivers must learn everything about treating diabetes. Understanding the condition and treatment options can go a long way in maintaining one’s quality of life. With a physician’s recommendation, diet, exercise, and medication changes may be introduced.

Tip #2. Diet:

Adequate nutrition plays a critical role when it comes to proper diabetes management. A well-balanced diet, low in sugar and saturated fats, helps alleviate symptoms and prevents complications caused by the condition.

Tip #3. Exercise and activity:

A light exercise regimen can help manage diabetes. However, aging adults might want to consult their physician before opting for a particular senior-friendly exercise regimen.

Tip #4. Prescribed medication is critical:

Missing an insulin injection or prescribed medication can have negative effects and cause serious consequences for those with diabetes. Seniors prone to medication mistakes can develop a way to stay organized.

They can use medication management tools like a pillbox, an alarm or a checklist displayed in a visible place. Alternatively, a family caregiver can provide useful medication reminders. Additional vaccination is also something you may want to consider. Some illnesses such as the flu can be much more severe for those with diabetes and this is easily prevented with a single injection.

Tip #5. Checking glucose and cholesterol levels:

Individuals with diabetes need to monitor their glucose levels. A doctor can provide all the necessary instructions on how to do it and what to look for. In addition, cholesterol levels and blood pressure also need to be watched regularly.

Tips For Managing Urinary Incontinence In Victoria’s Seniors

Tips For Managing Urinary Incontinence In Victoria’s Seniors
A pair of senior seated on bench | Tips For Managing Urinary Incontinence In Victoria's Seniors | Comfort Keepers Victoria | BLOG POST

What Every Senior in Victoria, BC, Needs to Know About Managing Incontinence

Urinary Incontinence | Urinary incontinence is a common problem among older adults. When untreated, incontinence can take a toll on a person’s health and social connections and severely damage their self-esteem.

Fortunately, incontinence can be easily managed with physician-approved lifestyle changes and treatments.

How Urinary Incontinence Occurs

When we urinate, the muscles in the bladder tighten and move the urine into a tube known as the urethra. Simultaneously, the muscles surrounding the urethra tend to relax to allow the elimination of urine from the body.

Incontinence happens when muscles in and around the bladder are not working properly. Involuntary leakage of urine can occur over short periods, often caused by a urinary infection, constipation, or as a side effect of prescribed medications.

Diagnosing and Treating Urinary Incontinence

Depending on the severity of your loved one’s symptoms, a specialist may recommend:

  • A urinalysis to rule out an infection or blood in the urine
  • Blood tests to examine calcium and glucose levels and whether the kidneys are working properly
  • A thorough physical exam
  • Medication to treat an overactive bladder
  • A low-impact exercise regimen to strengthen the pelvic muscles
  • A surgical procedure if nothing else seems to improve the condition

Four Tips for Managing Urinary Incontinence at Home

Certain lifestyle changes can help your parent to lessen the symptoms and manage their incontinence more adequately:

Tip #1. Pelvic muscle exercises:

This is a regular regimen that focuses on strengthening the pelvic muscles and it can eliminate incontinence in some cases.

Tip #2. Timed bathroom breaks:

Sticking to a pre-determined restroom schedule can help aging adults with urge and overflow incontinence.

Tip #3. Fluid and diet management:

Your loved one should seek advice from their physician about introducing certain dietary changes and what food and drinks to avoid.

Tip #4. Behavioural changes:

Some lifestyle choices can make incontinence worse. Among other things, your loved one should avoid drinking alcohol and beverages that contain caffeine, quit smoking, and refrain from lifting heavy objects.

Safety Tips For Reducing The Risk Of Skin Cancer

Safety Tips For Reducing The Risk Of Skin Cancer
A closeup of a senior male's face | Safety Tips For Reducing The Risk Of Skin Cancer | Comfort Keepers Victoria | BLOG POST

What Every Senior in Victoria, BC, Needs to Know About Reducing the Risk of Skin Cancer

Reducing The Risk Of Skin Cancer | Most seniors enjoy outdoor activities in their retirement, summertime activities especially. While it is important to spend time outside, stay vital, and engage in physical activity, older adults need to practice certain sun safety protocols if they wish to prevent skin damage and ward off the risk of developing skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, and as much as 90% of diagnosed skin cancers are caused by ultraviolet radiation. As aging adults have more sensitive skin, they are more susceptible to sustaining sunburns and skin damage, which can lead to the development of skin cancer.

Reducing the Risk of Skin Cancer in Seniors:

  • Avoid the hottest hours of the day – From 10 am to 4 pm, the harmful UV radiation is at its peak. Unless necessary, your Mom or Dad should refrain from going out during these times. Instead, they can opt to take a walk in the early morning or late evening.
  • Dress adequately – When going outdoors, your loved one might want to consider sun-safe clothes for better protection. This means wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Accessories such as sunglasses, a hat, or a parasol can help too. In addition to this, seniors should remember to seek shade wherever possible and always bring a bottle of water with them.
  • Apply sunscreen throughout the day – Your Mom or Dad must create a habit of applying sunscreen of at least SPF 30 before going outside. If they are about to stay out longer, sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours or so.
  • Practice medication safety – As some prescriptions may cause increased sun sensitivity, your loved one should consult with their doctor about their medications before engaging in any outdoor activities.
  • Recognizing the signs of skin cancer – Additionally, your parent should also consider undergoing an annual skin cancer assessment. Early detection is paramount for treating skin cancer successfully.
