Everything Seniors and Caregivers in Edmonton, AB, Need to Know About Avoiding Holiday Stress

Senior In-Home Care | Do you find yourself stressing out over the holidays? You are among millions of aging adults who experience the holiday season as extremely stressful. This should be a time of excitement, joy, family, friends, and happiness, not stress. In-home care is available to help families and their aging loved ones cope with the anxiety and overwhelming activities that accompany the holiday schedule.

Five Tips for Caregivers to Avoid a Stressful Holiday Season

Tip #1. Maintain a Regular Regimen:

If you exercise regularly, attend a fitness class, or participate in other physical activities, continue to do so during the holidays. It can be stressful to think of what you aren’t doing because it’s the holiday season. These activities help to eliminate stress and should be incorporated into daily living during the holidays. In-home care providers can remind aging adults to stay consistent with physical activity.

Tip #2. A No-Stress Season:

Think of all the things you’re most grateful for and how they bring joy to your life. Don’t dwell on what you don’t have or can’t buy this holiday season. Family, food, laughs and good times will bring immeasurable joy, so spend time focusing on these things.

Tip #3. Alcohol Limitations:

While it is common for alcohol to be served at almost every holiday festivity, it is necessary to limit the amount being consumed. Drinking too much alcohol can decrease your inhibitions and lead to aggressive or combative behaviour. When hosting holiday events, provide minimal alcohol to friends and family to create a less hostile and more pleasant environment for those in attendance.

Tip #4. Balance the Budget:

Spending more than you have budgeted is easy during the holiday season. Purchase gifts you can afford, and know it’s okay to say no to certain gifts that aren’t within your price range. Before the holidays, review your budget and decide to stick to it. The best way to be truly happy during the holidays is not to spend it wondering how you’ll survive financially once the season has ended.

Tip #5. Relax and Enjoy You:

Yes! Everyone needs time for themselves during the holidays. The holiday season can become so consumed with things to do that you forget to make time for yourself. A few minutes a day doing something you enjoy makes a difference in stress levels. Get a massage or take a long bath to experience some quiet time.

Family and aging adults benefit from professional in-home care during the holidays. Stress management is essential in everyday life and increases during the holidays. Every effort to control it to make the season more enjoyable.

What Every Senior in Edmonton, AB, Needs to Know About Managing Diabetes with Home Health Care

November is Diabetes Awareness Month and the perfect opportunity to talk about Diabetes Management for Seniors. Diabetes affects millions of people around the world. It is essential to remain aware of the necessary methods and practices to lead a healthy life while living with the disease. It can be challenging to maintain this during the holidays, especially for seniors.

November is #DiabetesAwarenessMonth

Management of diabetes can be done with the proper approach, and for seniors, it can be helpful to have professional home health care assistance. The changes required to manage blood sugar levels can be implemented into everyday lifestyle changes. During the holidays, there are a few things that aging seniors can do to ensure that their levels stay at a healthy range.

Three Tips to Support Diabetes Management for Seniors

Tip #1. Eat Smart:

Holidays are about family, friends, parties, time off work, spiritual reflections, and lots of good food. Seniors must take precautions and continue to eat smart during the holidays. This means making healthy food choices and not skipping meals. There is no green light to overindulge because you’ve missed a meal. Not eating sensibly throughout the day can cause diabetics to make poor food choices.

Tip #2. Exercise:

Take the time to exercise or work out during the holidays for successful home health care. Diabetes does not take the holidays off. It becomes more important to watch your levels due to the possibility of eating the wrong foods and missing out on regular workout routines. Take morning walks, use the treadmill that’s collecting dust, and stay moving whenever possible. Set out at least an hour each day to implement physical activity.

Tip #3. Alcohol Awareness:

This is a reminder to watch the alcohol intake. Remember, it is okay to drink over the holidays. Take inventory of what you are drinking and how much you are consuming. If you attend multiple dinners or parties within a week, skip the alcohol from time to time.

Seniors should rely on their home healthcare assistants to help them maintain good habits during the holiday season. These professionals are aware of the effect that diabetes has on the health of aging adults.

Holidays can be miserable for seniors if they become ill due to a lack of attention to their diabetes. Careful maintenance and habits ensure that the holidays will be happy, and the new year will be filled with prosperity and good health.

What Every Senior in Edmonton, AB, Needs to Know About Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast Cancer Awareness for Seniors | Breast cancer is a serious disease that should be given serious awareness. There are thousands of new cases each year, but awareness and screenings can decrease these numbers.

October is #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth

For every 100,000 women, there are more than 80 new cases under 65 vs. more than 400 new cases for those over 65.

In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the following information is provided to bring awareness to what seniors should know about the cancer that affects people from all walks of life.

Breast Cancer Awareness in Senior Women Statistics

#1. New diagnoses:

Recent studies indicate that at least half of new breast cancer diagnoses occur in women older than 60 and at least 20% of those are 70 years of age and older.

#2. Breast cancer occurrence:

Statistics show that one in eight women will have the disease at some point in their lives. In breast cancer cases where close relatives such as mother, sister, daughter and other first-degree family members have developed breast cancer, the risk doubles.

However, don’t be deceived, it is entirely possible to encounter the disease without a hereditary connection.

#3. Family history:

Although, family history is considered, less than 20% of those diagnosed have a family member who is dealing with or has suffered from the disease.

#4. Breast cancer in men:

To be clear, not only women develop breast cancer. The odds are less but one out of 1,000 males will develop the disease at some point.

Long-Term Care for Preventive Maintenance

There are long-term care and preventive maintenance tips to help decrease the chances of acquiring breast cancer. While these are helpful tips, they are not to be confused with guaranteed prevention; maintenance is also important.

Three Tips to Prevent Breast Cancer

Tip #1. Stay Physically Active:

Aging adults must stay active to keep a healthy metabolism. Research indicates that women who’ve gained between 20 and 30 pounds after turning 18 are up to 40% more likely to receive a breast cancer diagnosis than those who maintain a healthy weight. Estrogen linked to fat in overweight women could be the cause.

Tip #2. Healthy Diet:

Healthy eating is an important regimen for all cancer prevention, including breast cancer. Those who consume foods with increased levels of carotenoids have almost a 20% lower risk of acquiring breast cancer than those who don’t. Carotenoids are present in vegetables and fruits.

Tip #3. Regular screenings:

Maintain a schedule for regular screenings and always remember that early detection is a factor in effective treatment.

Long-term care for seniors involves many factors. It is essential to support preventive maintenance for all illnesses and diseases. Comfort Keepers® can help.

What Every Senior in Edmonton, AB, Needs to Know About Healthy Options for Aging-In-Place

Healthy Aging-in-Place Options | As life goes on, most older adults think about their longevity and living healthily. There are several ways that seniors age as healthy as possible, but becoming proactive about these methods is the first step during senior care

Loved ones and family members are primarily concerned that the seniors are cared for and have the best life possible. Provisions made by in-home care professionals assure patients that tasks and simple daily activities can be completed easily. Older adults usually want to prove that they can care for themselves, and often they can.

However, trained professionals make it easier for seniors to get proper meals, make appointments, and get the rest they need with the help of trained professionals.

Healthy Aging-in-Place Options for Senior In-Home Health Care

Senior care is best when applied to the day-to-day necessities of life. There is much more to living a healthy life than just having someone to help. There are several things that older adults can do to make sure they feel their best and experience happiness during their golden years.

Here are a few senior care ideas to kickstart your day to a lifetime of good health and happiness.

Three Tips That Promote Healthy Aging in Place:

Tip #1. Colourful Plates:

The best way to make your plate is to add all the healthy food groups. Fill your plate with the proper serving of fruits, vegetables, grains, and proteins. Seasonal fruits are filled with colour, lean proteins are filling, and vegetables are available in many colours and flavours. This ensures that older adults are eating healthy foods that taste great.

Tip #2. Get Out & Mingle:

Socializing is important at any age, but especially for seniors. It is a major contributor to quality living as an older adult. Spending time among peers and doing things seniors enjoy brings significant joy to daily living.

Tip #3. Sleep Patterns:

Older adults need to rest and get plenty of sleep. Bedtime should deliver at least 8 hours of sleep each night. It should be easy for older adults to establish a bedtime but sometimes they can be restless. Remove distractions from the room and do not eat heavy meals within a few hours of sleep.

Aging is a natural part of life. With proper strategies for senior care in place, being a senior citizen can be healthy and enjoyable, too.

What Every Senior in Edmonton, AB, Needs to Know About A Healthy Aging Process

Healthy Aging | As your elderly loved one reaches their golden years, they can age more or less gracefully.  We have some tips to help make the process as conducive to good health as possible.

Healthy Aging Tips for Seniors

Tip #1. Eat Healthy:

We’re sure your loved one has been told this enough times.  But whether Mom or Dad is a bit willful or…just human, they’ll have a hard time sticking to that kale and baked salmon routine.  We’ve found that home care providers help with this by cooking with your loved one.  Sharing meals, as you know, leads to solid nutrition rather than loads of high-calorie comfort food.

Tip #2. Practice Prevention:

It’s so important for our elderly not to let checkups blood tests and other preventative measures fall through the cracks.  Further, prevention can mean medicine, in addition to vitamin supplements and a healthy diet.  Prevention can mean a lot of things, but all of them benefit from a few reminders.

Home care often involves a gentle touch.  Because our caregivers are in the home with your loved one, they build a bond and trust.  They’re the right ones, not to manage your mom or dad’s health life, but to provide reminders and to ensure prevention is in place.

Is Home Care Good For A Senior’s Social Life?

Our next two tips center around the emotional well-being of your loved one.

Tip #3. Friendship and Companionship:

When an elderly person is in an elder care facility, he or she may have quite a few friends.  However, a healthcare provider involved in-home care is a close friend who is around your loved one for an extended period of time.  This sort of relationship can be more meaningful and can raise morale.  At the very least it will ward off loneliness.

Tip #4. Remain Active:

The home care your loved one will receive from Comfort Keepers will involve transportation and activities that your family member may enjoy.  This keeps a person young at heart.
