Social Wellness and Its Benefits to Seniors

Social Wellness and Its Benefits to Seniors
Two senior couples laughing together | Social Wellness and Its Benefits to Seniors | Comfort Keepers Edmonton | BLOG POST

Social Wellness is a big piece of the puzzle for Alberta’s Seniors

Social wellness and its benefits to seniors | When it comes to feeling our happiest and healthiest, two of the most significant factors are undoubtedly physical and mental well-being. No question that staying fit, following a healthy and balanced diet, and keeping the brain sharp are pivotal in shaping one’s everyday well-being.

But what about social wellness? Often described as one’s ability to communicate and maintain meaningful relationships with others, social wellness is just as vital as physical and mental wellness and requires the same level of maintenance.

As we age, we must foster positive social engagement to safeguard against isolation and improve aspects of our physical health.

According to Statistics Canada, over 24.6% of the Canadian population, 65 and over live alone.

Canada’s Guide to Retirement Living and Care

Why Is Social Wellness for Seniors Important?

Let’s face it, almost every aspect of life changes as we reach our senior years. Children may move away, friends and family may pass, and certain health conditions complicate a full and socially active lifestyle. As these changes occur, we must talk about them.

Without a support system of friends and family in place, many of life’s events can slowly begin to take their toll on us and potentially lead to a downward spiral of loneliness, isolation, and even major depression.

But by nurturing current relationships and taking steps to build new ones, seniors can create a reliable network that allows them to learn new skills, view things from different perspectives, and see how others effectively manage the challenges of aging.

Did You Know: Socially active seniors had a 70% lower rate of cognitive decline than those who were less socialized.

Though it may go without saying, maintaining social wellness supports several other health benefits. Not only can it help strengthen our immune system, but it can lead to better sleep and increased productivity. Studies also show that increased socialization can enhance our cognitive abilities and even reduce our risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia. One study showed seniors with an active social life had a 70% lower chance of cognitive decline than those seniors who do not socialize regularly.

What Can Seniors Do to Improve Their Social Wellness?

One barrier seniors may face is not knowing what opportunities are available. That’s why we’ve put together a list of some of the ways seniors can begin to build and maintain their social connections:

  • Volunteer, or become involved in community efforts and activities.
  • Join a senior center, and make connections with like-minded individuals.
  • Continue learning through online courses or those offered by universities and community colleges.
  • Find a new hobby or interest, or revisit old ones.
  • Invite a friend over for coffee or tea.
  • Take a part-time job.
  • Offer assistance to someone in the family.
  • Join an exercise group or class.
  • Reach out to those at a church, synagogue, temple, or other place of worship to sign up for upcoming events.
  • Utilize social media to stay connected with friends and families (near and far).

Seniors Need to Know About The Risks of Pneumonia

Seniors Need to Know About The Risks of Pneumonia
Senior woman with a ventilator to face | Comfort Keepers Edmonton | Seniors Needs to Know About the Risks of Pneumonia | BLOG POST

What Every Senior in Edmonton, AB, Needs to Know About the Risks of Pneumonia

What should you know about pneumonia risks in seniors? Heart disease and cancer often affect seniors as they age, but pneumonia also poses a serious and potentially life-threatening risk, especially for older adults with existing health conditions.

What is Pneumonia?

Viruses, bacteria, or fungi can cause pneumonia, a respiratory infection that sends over a million seniors to the hospital each year.

Do seniors face a higher risk of developing pneumonia compared to other age groups?

The immune system weakens as we age, and our natural defence against colds, flu, and infections becomes less reliable and which makes seniors more susceptible to germs.

A senior patient recovering from illness or surgery is more susceptible to becoming ill. Even a common cold can quickly lead to a lung infection, making it harder to rid the lungs of infectious elements. Diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), HIV, heart disease, and other conditions can pose greater challenges for a quick recovery, too.

Pneumonia may commonly occur, but it is not an anticipated part of aging. We can reduce the risk of pneumonia by being proactive. Of course, there’s no guarantee, but adults can reduce their risk as much as possible. Here are some suggestions for maintaining better health this year.

Reduce the Risks of Pneumonia:

  • Get vaccinated: Influenza can lead to pneumonia, so talk with your doctor about the flu and pneumonia vaccinations.
  • Practice good hygiene: Wash hands thoroughly and often. Keep sanitizer available and as much as possible avoid touching surfaces like door handles and grocery cart handles.
  • Stop smoking: Smokers are at a higher risk for pneumonia, as well as other illnesses, so stop!
  • Build immunity through diet: Talk to your physician about a diet to help strengthen the immune system.

Over-Medication Prevention: Protecting and Assisting Seniors

Over-Medication Prevention: Protecting and Assisting Seniors
Senior woman taking medication | Over-Medication Prevention | Comfort Keepers Edmonton | BLOG POST

What Every Senior in Edmonton, AB, Needs to Know About Preventing Over-Medication

Over-Medication Prevention | For certain individuals, medication is crucial for maintaining their well-being and cannot be avoided. However, several prescribed drugs taken simultaneously can result in higher occurrences of harmful interactions and dangerous side effects.

#DYK – 30 – 40% of people age 65 and over take 5 or more medications regularly. Of that group, about 10 percent of them take 10 or more drugs.

Excessive use of medication and taking multiple prescriptions (referred to as polypharmacy) are prevalent and on the rise among older individuals.

As seniors tend to have more long-term health issues that necessitate medication, it is important to note that their aging bodies may respond differently to drugs and may process them at a slower rate, placing a higher emphasis on the potential risks of drug interactions.

Contributing Factors to Senior Over-Medication

The increase in polypharmacy in the past decade is primarily due to the availability of a greater variety of drugs for chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis.

Improved diagnoses have also contributed to the rise in medication usage. Moreover, the marketing of drugs directly to consumers has led to patients requesting and using medications they have seen advertised on television or in magazines.

Insurers, doctors, and pharmacies often fail to coordinate with each other, and the responsibility falls on the patient to manage multiple prescriptions from different prescribers. This can be something that some seniors struggle with.

#FastFact – Recent statistics reveal that 1 in every 4 patients have prescriptions from at least 4 doctors.

Seniors with slightly elevated cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar may be able to reduce their medication intake if they make necessary lifestyle changes to manage their conditions.

However, individuals who use chronic disease medications for extended periods, or even indefinitely, may not be able to improve with mere lifestyle changes alone.

Additionally, numerous studies indicate that a considerable number of individuals are being prescribed antidepressants, anti-anxiety medication, and pain relievers unnecessarily.

Potential Dangers of Senior Over-Medication

While drugs do save lives, few prescription medications are completely free of risks or side effects. A 2012 report by Bruyere, a Canadian health services organization, listed several factors that put seniors at increased risk from polypharmacy:

  • Physiologic changes (increased sensitivity to benzodiazepines, analgesics, or antihypertensives)
  • Reduced kidney and liver function (making it harder to excrete drugs)
  • Reduced body fat (this changes the distribution of drugs)
  • Existing conditions (dementia, delirium, poor kidney function, poor balance, and increased likelihood of falls)

The mental faculties and cognition of seniors can be impacted by polypharmacy. This can lead to misdiagnoses of depression, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease in overmedicated seniors.

Recognize the Warning Signs of Senior Over-Medication

Recognizing the signs of senior over-medication can seniors who are overmedicated. These indicators may include fatigue, physical issues such as dry mouth or sores, mental confusion, social withdrawal, visual or auditory illusions, loss of balance, frequent falls, broken bones, and seizures. If any of these red flags appear or there are abrupt shifts in behaviour, it is important to seek a physician to assess the situation.

How to Cut Down on Senior Prescriptions:

  • If your loved one is on multiple medications, including vitamins, herbs, and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, have them reassessed by their primary care doctor annually. PROtip: Remember to bring all pill bottles with you to the appointment.
  • Take an active approach when discussing medication with the doctor. Inquire about the necessity of each drug and the reasoning behind it for your loved one. Additionally, seniors can inquire about the possibility of reducing their dosages.
  • Consult the doctor about potential lifestyle adjustments that may reduce your loved one’s need for certain medications. Explore alternative therapies like acupuncture, yoga, or meditation as options.
  • Don’t just rely on the doctor to know details about drug-drug interactions. Do online research. Reliable websites such as The DIR (Drug Information Resources) https://www.dal.ca/diff/druginfo.html and medscape.com list potential interactions and provide explanations.
  • If a new medication is added to an existing regimen of two or more drugs, and there are unfamiliar side effects, it is important to inform the doctor. This is especially crucial if symptoms such as stomach discomfort, nausea, lightheadedness, drowsiness, or impaired coordination arise.
  • As time passes, medication may produce a novel side effect or interaction with other drugs due to the buildup of potency. Conversely, some drugs may lose efficacy over time, potentially causing previously treated symptoms to reappear.
  • Stick with one pharmacy and pharmacist and ensure they are informed about all medications, including herbs prescribed by other medical professionals. Pharmacists are often more knowledgeable about potential drug interactions compared to doctors.

A Closer Look at Strokes: How They Affect Seniors and What Can Be Done

A Closer Look at Strokes: How They Affect Seniors and What Can Be Done
Senior couple seated on couch in discussion | A Closer Look At Strokes: How They Affect Seniors and What Can be Done | Comfort Keepers Edmonton | BLOG POST

What Every Senior in Edmonton, AB, Needs to Know About Senior Care and Strokes

A Closer Look at Strokes | Stroke is the third largest killer of Canadian adults, after heart disease and cancer. It’s also the primary cause of physical disabilities and is second only to Alzheimer’s disease as a cause of mental disability. While people at any age can be susceptible to suffering from a stroke, nearly three-quarters of strokes occur in people over the age of 65.

Women are disproportionately affected by stroke: 45% more women die of stroke than men in Canada, and because they live longer, more women are living with the effects of stroke

Risk factors for a stroke include high blood pressure, genetics, gender, tobacco use, heart disease, diabetes, weight, age, and the use of some medications.

Three main types of stroke can occur:

Ischemic stroke – Most strokes fall into this category. In an ischemic stroke, arteries narrow creating blockage and reducing blood flow to the brain.

Hemorrhagic stroke – During a hemorrhagic stroke, a blood vessel leaks or bursts, causing damage.

Transient ischemic attack – Sometimes referred to as a “mini-stroke,” this is a short period of neurological impairment caused by a temporary disruption in blood flow to the brain or the eye, often serving as an early warning sign of a stroke.

It’s important to note that medical attention after a stroke is critical, and time is of the essence. Anyone suffering from the symptoms of a stroke should not wait for the effects to go away or get worse. They should call 9-1-1 or visit their physician as soon as possible. Quick treatment can minimize damage and potentially save someone’s life.

Stroke Symptoms in Seniors Can Include:

  • Trouble speaking
  • Confusion or trouble understanding
  • Paralysis of the face, arms or legs
  • Trouble seeing
  • Headache
  • Trouble walking
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Neck stiffness
  • Dizziness

Vision Impairment in Seniors and How In-Home Care Can Help

Vision Impairment in Seniors and How In-Home Care Can Help
Senior woman at eye exam | Comfort Keepers Edmonton | Vision Impairment in Seniors and How In-Home Care Can Help | BLOG POST

What Every Senior in Edmonton, AB, Needs to Know About In-Home Care and Vision Impairment

Vision Impairment in Seniors, or vision loss, is a major contributor to a loss of independence and this can be devastating. Luckily, there are options for seniors with this disability, through in-home care and other medical services.

November is #NationalHomecareAndHospiceMonth and ##DiabeticEyeDiseaseMonth. This blog is filled with information for In Home Care and Vision Impairment for Edmonton’s seniors.

Vision Impairment in Seniors

Seniors who suffer from vision loss may experience problems with daily activities like reading, meal preparation, or using the phone. Common activities can become difficult, or even impossible, and that’s frightening as vision loss increases with age.

Still, vision impairment doesn’t come as a “normal” part of aging, and its negative effects deserve serious attention.

Research shows that when older adults lose their vision, they face significant challenges in daily life. Many seniors struggle to run errands, shop independently, manage their finances, and keep up with housework.

People with impaired vision are less likely to go outdoors and take fewer walks for fear of falling and becoming injured.

Vision Impairment in Seniors and Chronic Conditions

Inactivity is known to lead to chronic illness. Seniors with impaired vision can acquire chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and stroke, in addition to their vision challenges.

These limitations and correlating chronic disease tend to manifest greater levels of depression and anxiety than in other seniors.

A visually-impaired senior can get into a vicious cycle, where depression worsens their physical state, and increases their depression. This spirals down to isolation because seniors refuse to participate in the social activities that they once enjoyed.

High levels of depression and anxiety may limit seniors from their everyday activities, even more than the visual problems have!

However, there’s good news! Professional therapies have been created to help visually impaired seniors. Doctors can prescribe rehab to teach coping skills for better managing vision loss. This way, seniors can remain active with their families and communities.

When a low-vision adult accepts assistance from family, friends, and supportive caregivers, with meal preparation and transportation to appointments or social events, their isolation becomes less of a problem, and a sense of normalcy resumes.

Senior Eye Health and Glaucoma

Senior Eye Health and Glaucoma

Glaucoma: What Seniors in Edmonton, AB, Need to Know

Senior Eye Health | Glaucoma is a condition that can harm the optic nerve and lead to loss of vision. It is also responsible for being the second most common cause of blindness.

Glaucoma is a disease that causes damage to the optic nerve and can lead to vision loss. As the second leading cause of blindness, it is important to understand its effects. This condition is caused by increased fluid pressure within the eyes and can result in up to 40 percent of vision loss without noticeable symptoms. Thankfully, early intervention can safeguard your eyes against significant vision impairment.

Why Do Some Seniors Develop Glaucoma?

At the front of the eye lies the anterior chamber – a space where clear fluid flows in and out to surrounding tissues. This fluid exits the chamber at the open angle, at the junction of the cornea and iris. Here, it passes through a sponge-like mesh that serves as a drainage system for the eye. However, there are instances when this fluid may flow too sluggishly through this drain. When this happens, pressure inside the eye can increase and potentially harm the optic nerve, leading to vision loss. Therefore, maintaining optimal pressure within the eye is crucial for preserving vision.

Elevated eye pressure does not necessarily mean that a person will develop glaucoma. Individuals may have varying levels of tolerance for higher eye pressure. Undergoing a thorough dilated eye exam can assess your eye pressure against what is considered a normal eye pressure level for seniors.

The Most Common Types of Glaucoma in Seniors

Type #1: Open-angle glaucoma

The most prevalent form of glaucoma is open-angle glaucoma, which impacts approximately 3 million individuals in the United States. It gradually leads to loss of peripheral vision without causing any pain. The condition occurs when the eye’s drainage canals become obstructed over some time. This results in a tunnel-like vision, similar to looking through a paper towel tube.

Due to the lack of symptoms and warning signs, people may not notice vision deterioration for several years. However, this glaucoma typically responds positively to medication, particularly if detected and addressed early on.

Type #2: Normal-Tension Glaucoma AKA Low-Tension Glaucoma

Normal-Tension Glaucoma, also known as Low-Tension Glaucoma, can result in both optic nerve damage and narrowed peripheral vision. While medication that lowers eye pressure by 30 percent may delay the progression of this type of glaucoma in some individuals, others may experience worsening symptoms despite having low eye pressure.

When diagnosing and treating this condition, it is crucial to consider an individual’s medical history, including any potential risk factors such as low blood pressure. If no risk factors are present, the treatment options for this type of glaucoma are the same as those for open-angle glaucoma.

Type #3: Angle-Closure Glaucoma

In the case of Angle-Closure Glaucoma, the fluid in the front of the eye cannot exit due to a blockage caused by a portion of the iris. This causes a sudden rise in eye pressure. Indications of this condition include intense pain, nausea, redness, and blurred vision.

Seeking immediate emergency medical attention is crucial if you experience these symptoms. Without intervention, vision loss can occur within one or two days. Fortunately, laser surgery and medication can effectively remove the blockage and safeguard eyesight.

Rare Type #1: Pigmentary Glaucoma

There are also rare types of glaucoma that can affect seniors. Older individuals may also experience uncommon forms of glaucoma. One such type is pigmentary glaucoma, characterized by the flaking off of pigment from the iris which can obstruct the meshwork and impede fluid drainage over time, posing a significant risk to vision.

Rare Type #2: Trauma-Induced Glaucoma

Additionally, trauma-induced glaucoma may result from a severe eye injury, exposure to chemicals, or penetration of the eye.

Senior Eye Health and Glaucoma; What Can Be Done?

At this time, there is no known cure for glaucoma. However, there are options such as medication or surgery that can assist in delaying or avoiding further deterioration of vision. The most suitable course of action is determined by the specific type of glaucoma a person may be experiencing.

As time goes by, certain medications may become ineffective or clash with other prescribed drugs. It is crucial to have a physician regularly oversee both glaucoma and the intake of related medications.

Research has demonstrated that identifying and addressing the issue in its early stages, before significant impairment occurs, is the most effective method for managing this condition. It is important to undergo periodic eye examinations with dilated pupils by a qualified eye doctor.

Starting at age 40, aim for an exam every two to four years, and increase the frequency to once a year after turning 55. Individuals over 50 who have a family history of glaucoma are advised to receive comprehensive annual exams.

October is #SuddenCardiacArrestAwarenessMonth, Let’s Talk Senior Heart Health

Always keep an eye on heart health, here’s how. Let’s discuss heart disease, what can cause it, and how to prevent it. Learn about heart health precautions that older adults and seniors can take to deter a serious heart condition.

Keep an Eye on Heart Health in Seniors: What is Heart Disease?

The leading cause of death in Americans, Heart Disease is a term used to categorize several types of heart conditions and ailments. Some of these types of heart conditions include heart defects, heart attack or failure, coronary artery disease, or peripheral arterial disease.

What Causes of Heart Disease?

Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of most preventable heart diseases. This condition occurs when the arteries throughout the body become narrowed and clogged with fatty plaque and buildup. Factors such as lack of exercise, an unhealthy diet, obesity, and smoking all contribute to the accumulation of this fatty plaque. As a result, these lifestyle habits significantly increase the risk of developing heart disease.

What Are Heart Disease Symptoms?

Although each type of preventable heart condition requires different treatment methods, many individuals with heart disease experience similar symptoms. For instance, chest pain or discomfort is the most common symptom and is often described as heaviness, pressure, or pain in the chest. In addition to this, other symptoms may include heavy sweating, shortness of breath, weakness, dizzy spells, palpitations, or an irregular heartbeat. Therefore, recognizing these signs early is crucial for timely medical intervention.

How To Keep an Eye on Heart Health and Prevent Heart Disease

The good news about heart disease is that most conditions are prevented by living a healthy lifestyle.

Keep an Eye on Heart Health: Seniors and a Healthy Lifestyle:

  • Eliminating smoking
  • Regularly seeing a doctor
  • Regularly Exercising

Helping Edmonton Seniors Keep Their Eyes Healthy as They Age

How to Keep Aging Eyes Healthy | With age, comes vision changes, and the need for an annual vision test. Seniors are encouraged to follow the doctor’s treatment plans and vision health. To maintain eye health and prevent their vision from getting impaired, seniors should include the following things into their routines.

Here Are 8 Tips to Keep Aging Eyes Healthy:

Tip #1. A Healthy Diet:

Good nutrition is important for a senior’s overall well-being. However, some groceries can help them maintain eye health. Kale, carrots, eggs, sweet potatoes, oranges, almonds, and salmon are great sources of nutrients and vitamins that can boost eye health.

Tip #2 – Exercise:

Exercising several times a week is beneficial to overall health but also for the eyes. When we work out, blood circulation is increased which leads to the removal of toxins and increased oxygen levels in the eyes.

Tip #3 Avoid Eye Trauma:

Seniors who want to maintain their eye health should avoid eye trauma by wearing protective eyewear or goggles, using caution around chemicals and sharp objects, and reducing the risk of falls in their homes.

Tip #4 Smart Computer Use:

Seniors who spend time in front of a computer can suffer from headaches, eye strain, vision blur or seeing double. Older adults who use computers regularly should ensure their workspace has good lighting, regularly scheduled breaks, and corrective eyewear as prescribed.

Tip #5 Consider Other Health Issues:

Many health problems can affect vision health. Speak with a professional to inquire how medical conditions and medications can impact the eyes.

Tip #6 Sunglasses:

Seniors need to get into the habit of always wearing sunglasses outside.

Tip #7 Sleep:

A good night’s sleep benefits one’s overall health, well-being, and quality of life. It is also an important factor for eye health as well.

Tip #8 Vision Screenings:

Since vision changes can happen rapidly for seniors, they should get their vision tested once a year.
