How In-Home Dementia Care Helps

In-home dementia care lets your loved one stay in familiar surroundings, with one-on-one support shaped around who they are and where they are in their journey. Our Toronto caregivers are trained to understand the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and other dementias, the changes in behaviour they bring, and how each person is affected differently as things progress. The goal is simple: help your loved one stay safe, supported and engaged at home, and help your family manage memory loss with confidence.

Signs it may be time to consider support include confusion about time or place, getting lost in familiar areas, forgetting medications, or changes in mood, withdrawal or personality. Some families consider a long-term care home; many prefer the comfort of care at home, which is where we can help.

Our Toronto dementia care is coordinated by a trained specialist. Jessie Saunders-Drutz, Client Care Coordinator, has completed the Dementia Care Program through the Alzheimer Society of Toronto, along with Behavioural Supports and the U-First! program for frontline workers.

Support With Routines and Personal Care

Day to day, a caregiver helps with familiar routines, personal care, meals and medication reminders, keeping life steady and predictable. Support is one-on-one and tailored to the type of dementia, whether Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia or Lewy body dementia, and to the person’s emotional, mental and physical needs.

Engagement, Familiarity and Safety

Familiarity is calming. Using our Interactive Caregiving™ approach, caregivers take time to learn a person’s preferences, history and the moments that matter to them, then build gentle activities around them: listening to music from their era, reading a well-loved book, looking through family photos, or simply talking about the day. Keeping the same caregiver where possible builds trust, reduces confusion, and supports steady routines. Throughout, gentle redirection and attention to safety at home help your loved one stay comfortable and as independent as possible.

Support for Family Caregivers

Caring for someone with dementia takes a toll, and families should not have to figure it out alone. We offer guidance, a listening ear, and practical help with daily routines and behaviours, along with respite so you can rest. See also Respite Care.

When Care Needs Change

Dementia does not unfold the same way for everyone. As needs change, we adjust how we provide care across the stages, helping your loved one stay engaged and safe at home for as long as possible. If more support becomes necessary, we can talk through the options together.

Every plan is personal. Call (416) 663-2930 to discuss a personalized dementia care plan, and we will build support around your loved one’s needs and your family’s situation.

A note on what we do: Our dementia care is non-medical support. Caregivers help with daily living and provide medication reminders but do not administer medication or provide clinical treatment. Where licensed nursing or clinical care is needed, we can arrange it or work alongside your medical providers.
